Work Diary - Walk 1

Evaluation

As a class, we went on a walk to take photographs of three subjects: Autumn Colours, Sense of Journey and more Back of Head shots. When introduced to the idea of a "photography walk", I questioned how it was going to work as we were all travelling together, and taking photos of the same subjects, which could potentially result in some of us having the same photographs. However, whilst on the walk, I noticed that we all had different and separate ideas depending on how we interpreted the subject. I personally enjoyed taking photographs of Autumn Colours, particularly on the first walk as the sky was bright blue, which contrasted with the orange, red and yellow leaves. Capturing images for Sense of Journey was pretty difficult at first, because I wasn't sure how I was meant to photograph something that I couldn't see. I did manage to take some photographs for the subject, which turned out pretty well. However, I believe my Journey photos from walk two were much better. Unfortunately, during this first walk, I mostly focused on Autumn Colours, and paid little attention into taking Journey photographs, and therefore didn't take any Back of Head shots.

I think this is the best Autumn Colours image from the first walk as it shows the contrast between bright green leaves and yellow/brown leaves. I like that the background is blurred and so we focus on the leaves closest to the lens. I also like that we can slightly see the blue sky in the background, but other than that, the background is mostly dark, which makes the leaves closest look much brighter and vibrant.

I believe this is the worst photograph I captured for Autumn leaves as there is a shadow which has blocked the sun, which prevents the light from showing the colour of the grass and leaves in the photograph. Although there is some light, there isn't enough to show the Autumn Colours at best.

This is my best image from the Sense of Journey subject, I like this photo a lot because the path looks as tough it gets narrower towards the background of the photo, which shows depth. I also like that we can see an equal amount of grass on both sides of the pathway. Another reason why I think this is my best image is because we cannot see where the path leads too, and as a result of this, viewers are able to interpret their own journey within the image.

I believe this is the worst image that I took for Journey, as I attempted to capture the road and the sign in the same image but failed to fit it in. This photo is also slightly blurry as I had to take it quite quickly. Although the idea of a road creates the sense of a journey, this image in particular does not capture that feeling, as we can only see a small part of the road.

Progression

Firstly, If I were to re-do this walk I would make sure I had taken at least a couple of Back of Head shots! However, as there is a walk 2, I was able to take some in order to substitute for having not taken any in the first walk. I also would like to take more Journey photographs, and concentrate on other objects that could signify the subject, other than pathways and roads. These are some of the Autumn Colours and Sense of Journey photographs that i have found on the internet, as well as Back of Head portraits that I could have taken, which i aspire to achieve if i ever add to this topic:
