Work Diary - Shape

Evaluation

Shape was quite difficult to take photographs of because I struggled to find the right objects to represent it. However, during the shoot, I tried to take as many photos as possible of every outline of an object that I saw, so the image would show it's shape and format. This topic was interesting because it wasn't as restricted as some of the other topics, and therefore, I was able to explore various types of angles and subjects to take photos of.

This is my best photo because it shows a variety of different outlined shapes such as triangles, trapeziums and rectangles. I also like that some of these shapes formed within the roof are at an angle, and so are slightly diagonal in the images because the roof reaches a point in the centre which makes the shapes like this. I also like that the image looks black and white, even though I took it in colour.

This is my worst image as I tried to get the shape of the sculpture within the photo, but failed as you can't actually see the bends and twists within the metal. I think I zoomed in so much that you can barely see what the photo is of, and that's why I have lost the entire shape of the sculpture.

Progression

If I were to continue taking photographs of shape, I would attempt at finding more extreme examples, like shapes within architecture, as this would be more interesting. Also, I think that I'd need to explore various ideas and concepts which link to shape, in order to create photographs that represent shape well. These are some of Shape photographs that i have found on the internet which i aspire to achieve if i ever add to this topic:

Definition Post - Shape

Definition of "Shape" - the external form, contours, or outline of someone or something.

Adjectives to describe and/or relate to the word "Shape" - symmetrical, straight, round, 2D, 3D, geometric, pointed, angle, irregular, regular, proportion, line, side, surface, asymmetrical, quadrilateral, familiar, outline, form, onside, outside, interior, exterior, pattern, repetition, structure, arched, architecture, common.

The four images below are the images that I have chosen from the internet to represent the idea of shape. The first image is of a pattern of the shape of a hexagon. I like that this photo shows a commonly known shape, and therefore we know straight away what it is. However, we can not see the entire body of the object, and so we don't know what the image is a close-up of. The second photograph I have chosen is of a street, with a few sphere concrete balls planted on the pavement. I like this image because it is peculiar, but at the same time interesting. I also like that it is in black and white, so that we can see the dark grey of the sphere in comparison to the white, plain pavement. I chose the third image because the shape of a house is familiar, which allows the viewer to relate and identify with the photo. Also, i like how bright and colourful the toy-block houses are. Lastly, I chose this image of a hallway because the arch isn't just one shape, but two - a square and a semi-circle, and we can see this clearly in the photo. I also like that the image has depth, and therefore the pattern of the shape of the arch is repeated throughout the photo.

My own definition of Shape - the exterior outline of an object or person, which signifies it's/their form.

Internet Images

I chose this image because the end of the pipes represent a circle, and therefore represent shape. I like that we can see various angles of the pipes as well as the different lengths. When I first looked at this photo, I thought of shapes straight away as a circle is one of the most common shapes to identify.

This photo is a little less obvious about shape than the first. I think this photo is of an edge of a building, but the outline looks like a triangle, and then inside the frame there are many other shapes like rectangles, triangles and squares. I like that this photo isn't so obvious, as it lets the viewer represent and interpret it in different ways.

This photo has been taken below of a building, and so, the building appears as a triangle, but in reality at a different angle, the building is a rectangle. It appears as a triangle in the photo because we can see the two sides that connect at a point, and then we identify this with the idea of a triangle. This represents shape because it is obvious that the building is the main focus, particularly as it is the brightest colour of the image.

This photo is one of my favourites as it is so bizarre and unique. This photo is so extraordinary because the idea of a giant, round, red ball bouncing in the middle of a street, is abnormal. I like that the street is quite dull in comparison to the brightly coloured ball. Obviously, the main focus of this image is the ball and therefore, straight away we think of the shape of a circle, and so this photograph represents the formal element of shape.

This image also represents shape as it shows the outline of an arrow, within a rectangle. I like that we can see two different shapes that are commonly known and therefore, obvious. I also like that the sign which displays these two shapes, is along the entire curve of the road, so it is repeated all the way through the image, from the foreground to the background.

I chose this image because depending on the way you look at it, you can either see the shape of a diamond or a square. I like that this photo has many interpretations as every viewer will see it differently. I also like that this photo of a fence has been taken against the sky as a background, and so there is nothing to distract the viewer away from the shape and outline of the fence.
