Image Bank - Pattern

Internet Images

Artificial

The image above shows a pattern that occurs repeatedly on a side of a building of flats. The pattern is obviously intentional so that every flat from the outside looks the same and the building looks more appealing. The pattern is neat and structured, with different columns of the same coloured stripes alongside the wall of the building. Obviously, the building has been painted this way and therefore, this is an artificial, deliberate pattern.

Similarly to the photo above, this image is of houses that have all architecturally been built the same, so that when you look at the houses from this angle, they create a pattern of triangular roofs and squared houses. This image is in black and white so it isn't colourful like the first, but it is clear that the photo is displaying the idea of replicating the same shape to make a pattern. Again, this pattern is man-made as the houses have been built this particular way, in order to create the pattern.

I chose this image above because despite the fact it is of a building structure again, this time the photo has been taken close-up, so we are able to see the patterns within the materials used for buildings. Here, we can see there is a clear pattern between the way the bricks have been assembled and built. Even though the colours of the bricks don't create a pattern, the actual shape does.

Natural

This photograph is an extreme close-up of the bottom of a leaf. We are able to see the pattern of the veins, on the surface of the leaf, which has occurred naturally. Each part of the leaf is identical to another, so the pattern has been repeated multiple times. Each line from the side of the image, connects to the centre line.

Again, this pattern has happened naturally. In this image we are able to see the pattern throughout the bark of a tree. Obviously, this is the surface of a tree that has been cut down as we are able to see the center of the bark. The pattern in this image is the gaps between the wood, where it has cracked and grown throughout the years.

This photo is a close-up of a sunflower, and we are able to see two/three patterns. Firstly, the center circle of the sunflower has a spotted pattern all over it. Secondly, the petals of the sunflower have unfolded out into the same pattern by surrounding the center of the flower, and then spiking out. There is also a slight pattern of colour within the petals, which we can only faintly see, but from the center to the outside, the colour of the petals get lighter.
