Definition Post - Tone

Definition of "Tone" - The lightness, brightness or value of a patch in a photography: dark tones correspond to shadows and light tones correspond to bright or highlighted areas.

Adjectives to describe and/ore relate to the word "Tone" - Light, Dark, Highlight, Shadow, Black, Grey, White, Contrast, Shade, Colourless, Bright, Bold, Intensity, Vivid, Strong, Deep, Intense, Detail, Monotone.

I chose the following images from the internet because I think they were the ones that displayed tone the best from the ones I looked at. The first image is a landscape of a tree in a park, where we are able to see the dark tones of the bark of the tree, but then in contrast, we can see the light tones of the white fence further into the background. We can also see the different shades of tones from where the tree's branches has created shadows on the grass. The second photo is a close-up of lots of flowers. This shows more light tones than dark as the flowers must be quite bright and light in colour, as they display as white in black-and-white. However, we can slightly see the shadows they form onto each other which makes them look 3D, but also introduces darker tones into the photograph. Thirdly, I chose this image because it was so bold and intense. In this photo we can see a black background, a table and bulky metal chain. Obviously, the background is a much darker tone in comparison to the chain, which appears white. This presents the contrast of the two tones vividly. Lastly, I chose this image where a fruit has been cut in half, because it shows the darker tone of the outside/skin of the fruit, in contrast with the lighter tone, inside of the fruit. Due to the tones being so intense, we are able to see the details of the fruit clearly.

My own definition of tone - the contrast between light and dark present in a photo, which is displayed as black and white or monotone.
