Image Bank - Tone

Internet Images

This photo displays tone because we can see the contrast between the dark grass, in comparison to the light clouds, which are shown as black-and-white. We are also able to see dark tones in the clouds as well. I chose this image because it evidently represents tone, but in an interesting way, as it is a landscape of a field and the sky.

This image is different to the first, as it is a close-up of tree bark. From this image we are able to see the lighter tones from the outside of the back (which sees the sun), but also the darker tones of the cracks and holes that are in the bark, which are dark toned, as they are shaded from the sun, and are therefore shadows created from the bark outside.

I chose this image because it shows that tone can still be seen, even if the photo is blurred slightly. This photo is an extreme close-up of a plant, so we are able to see the plant in focus, but the background and so, everything around the plant is blurred. From this, we are able to establish the lighter and darker tones within the plant, but also the ones that are in the background (but obviously, we cannot define what they are from).

This photo interested me because it wasn't a natural setting. Here, we can see lots of people in a kitchen, talking and laughing. As the photo is in black and white, we are able to see the dark tones of the people's clothes, the kitchen utensils, the chairs etc., as well as the lighter tones of the people's skin, the walls, the door, the table etc., I like this image, particularly because it looks antique and old as it is a black-and-white photo.

This photograph of a landscape of a street appealed to me because we can define the tones within each aspect of the photo. We can also differentiate which parts of the photo are light toned, and which are much darker toned, and which are in between, as they are presented as either, black, white or grey. I like this image because it is of a scenario that occurs in everyday life, but still looks interesting and extraordinary.

Lastly, I chose this image of two boats, because one sail is white, and the other is black. This is because the white one is in direct view of the sunlight, forming a much lighter tone, whereas the other is hidden, and therefore the first boat has created a shadow onto this second boat, creating a darker tone. There is a definite difference between the two tones, which is evident in this photo.
